Lanre (pronounced LON-ray and short for Olanrewaju) is a member of our Orkin social media team and a talented musician who compares songwriting to his work.
“Writing a song is trying to connect with people,” he says, “and that’s what we’re trying to do in social media – connect with the people our client wants.”
A native of New Jersey, Lanre and his family, whose heritage goes back to Nigeria, moved to the Atlanta area when he was a sophomore in high school. A distance runner, he also pursued his passion for music, singing in the school chorus and recording his first album – a combination of R&B and pop – at age 16.
As a junior business marketing major at Georgia State University (BBA Marketing 2014), he took a social media marketing class, which “opened a whole new world to me and I was hooked.” That world included e-commerce, community engagement and branding. His newfound interest led to a PR internship that exposed him to event marketing and product releases, followed by another internship at a recording studio. His first real job was managing social media for as many as 19 Marriott brand hotels.
In addition to working with a personal trainer and practicing his music, Lanre is an avid traveler who already is 22 trips into his goal of visiting 100 countries. He says Rio de Janeiro is his favorite place of all- so far. He had been as a child when he accompanied his dad on a business trip, but going as a young adult was a different experience. “The people are amazing. They take carpe diem very seriously – every day is a celebration. I like that approach,” he says, with a wide, affirming smile.
