He’s a budding standup comedian and prize-winning video gamer who compares his job as a programmer to building a house out of Legos. Meet JR Reed, who joined JS in the fall of 2017 to bolster our growing web development unit.
After graduating high school in Atlanta and a brief stint at NYU, JR enrolled at the Art Institute of Atlanta to learn video game design. The only problem was, he’s “not very good at art.” So he tried his hand at programming and found his niche. Following graduation in 2009 (with “Best in Show” and “Outstanding Academic Performance” awards in hand), he worked as a web developer at three Atlanta agencies before coming to JS.
About that Lego analogy: JR says the task of making the desired functions work on a website requires seeing both the whole and all the individual parts – just like building a house out of Legos. To make it function like a client wants, he must analyze and compartmentalize the users, the signups, the formatting- essentially everything behind the intended design.
“JR” is the second nickname his family gave him. His mother named him Michael out of her love of Michael Jackson, and called him “MJ” as tribute. But when the unsavory stories about Jackson started appearing, he asked his mother to stop using that nickname, and she switched to “JR.” The J is a nod to his middle name, which he holds close to the vest.
He is planning his first night on the stand-up stage, writing material and scouting locations. Fortunately for our clients, his web development talent is nothing to laugh at.
