Jackson Spalding Hires Chuck Toney to Develop Higher Education Practice

ATLANTA (May 19, 2014) – Jackson Spalding, one of the largest independent marketing communication firms in the Southeast, has hired senior communications strategist Chuck Toney to build upon the firm’s higher education work. Most recently, Toney served as assistant to the president to both former University of Georgia President Michael Adams and current UGA President Jere Morehead. Other past higher education experience includes serving as speechwriter and policy analyst for the UGA Office of Public Affairs and public information director, News Services at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina. He is an experienced speaker and presenter on communications issues in higher education.

“Jackson Spalding has served numerous clients in the higher education space dating back almost 20 years,” said Brian Brodrick, principal and general manager of Jackson Spalding’s Athens office. “Growing our work in higher ed is a key strategic element for JS going forward and we are so happy to have Chuck at the forefront of this endeavor. Aside from being an incredibly savvy communications strategist and leader, he’s also a truly genuine person and a perfect fit for our culture. We’re honored to have him as a JSer.”

In his role at Jackson Spalding, Chuck Toney will focus on many of the firm’s current higher education clients but will also work to build and deepen relationships at other institutions and organizations around the Southeast. However, as with all Jackson Spalding team members, Chuck will also work on clients outside of his primary focus area. A tenet of the firm is to have its professionals apply their thinking to different industries to bring new perspectives and energy to other client teams.

“Many companies have values that reside in an employee handbook or picture frame, but from everything I have seen at Jackson Spalding, their people live their values and embody them to their fullest,” said Toney. “I have truly treasured the time, experience and friendships developed during my 15 years at UGA. It’s a special place to me and always will be, but I had a yearning to broaden the impact I have had thus far in my career to other institutions needing help telling their stories. I am elated to have this opportunity to continue not only the great work at JS, but also to build new relationships and affect the larger dialogue around higher ed.”

Chuck Toney is a graduate of Presbyterian College and Clemson University where he completed his Bachelors and Masters degrees, respectively. He is a past president of the Rotary Club of Oconee County and current member of Board of Directors for Extra Special People, a non-profit organization. Toney will be based in Jackson Spalding’s Athens, Georgia office.
